Making the Most of a Compact Patio with Outdoor Furniture
By Tom Campbell
Would you like to decorate your outdoor space but don’t know exactly what to do with it because it’s a bit smaller than you’d like? Do you not have space for a full outdoor sofa set but would like more than just a bistro table and bar stools? If so, there are several steps you can take to make your space as large as possible, and also to make the most of the space you have without making your patio overly crowded! Maximize Your Space A patio is like an artist’s canvas: it holds a vast amount of possibility, but before it’s decorated it must be properly primed. This means clearing out anything from your patio that isn’t absolutely necessary. Folding chairs must go, as must any extremely large potted plants that make your space look smaller than it is. If you have foliage around the borders of your patio, make sure that they are trimmed back to allow you the most space possible. Extra planters that are collecting weeds only take up extra space – get rid of anything that doesn’t have decorative or functional value. Consider Your Outdoor Activities Before making any long-term choices on your outdoor furniture, consider what you’d like to use the space for. Do you see yourself dining outside more, or would you like some comfortable seating for enjoying a lemonade on a hot summer day? Do you like to sit upright, or relax on a chaise lounge? A compact space doesn’t mean you have no choices, but you may have to prioritize to make sure you have the right pieces. Pick the Right Type of Furniture While a full patio set may not be the right answer for a compact space, that doesn’t mean you don’t have a lot of choices. Sectional outdoor furniture is often a perfect solution, because it can be bought in pieces that have multiple uses and can stack away out of sight if they are not needed. Thus the large outdoor sofa might condense to a loveseat when it’s not in use, freeing up your patio space for other activities such as grilling or dining on your bistro table. Sectional furniture comes in a variety of styles and materials, including cast aluminum, teak, and wicker. Outdoor wicker furniture is a popular choice for many busy professionals because it involves very little maintenance and stays beautiful for years.
